DANUBE CYCLE PATH

The Danube cycle path does not end in Vienna. 282 kilometres seperate the Austrian capital from the Hungarian one. A lot of interesting sights is on the way!

FACTS

Individual cycling tour.
Start & end cities:
 Vienna (1,8 million inhabitants), Budapest (2,2 million inhabitants).
Route: Beautiful cycle path from Hainburg to Bratislava, also from Komarno to Esztergom. From Visegrad to Budapest merely used side roads with little traffic.
Arrival and departure: For those arriving by car is the garage in the Gartenhotel Altmannsdorf included. By flight arrival - train tickets from Budapest to Vienna after 19:00 will be sent in advance.
Sights: Schlosshof, Prunkschloss Maria Theresia's (recently renovated for  230 million), Hainburg (Austria's most important city gate), Carnuntum ("active" Romans amusement park), Bratislava (402,000 inhabitants, castle, Coronation Church, Primate's Palace, etc.), Györ (Liebfrauen Cathedral, Bishop's Castle), Komárno/Komárom (divided city, 9 fortresses), Esztergom (Cathedral with the greatest altarpiece of the world; third largest domed structure in Europe), Visegrad (Royal Palace), Szentendre (artists town). Danube bend. Small Carpathians. Budapest (numerous attractions from the Margaret Island to the Castle district, etc.).

  • Day 2, Bratislava (68 km)
    Riding through the national park Donauauen to Hainburg. Castle courtyard visit (admission fee is included). Continuing on the cycle path directly into the center of the Slovak capital. Every Saturday, free ship journey Vienna-Bratislava (if notified while booking).

  • Day 3, Mosonmagyaróvár (45 km)
    Riding on beautiful paths to the Slovak/Hungarian border; further through Dunasziget and the "little Schütt" nature reserve to Mosonmagyaróvár.

  • Day 4, Komárno - SK (67 km cycling, 38 km by train)
    First by train to Györ (bike ticket for € 1,50 payable on place) and riding further on side roads to the Hungarian/Slovak border, continuing on the Slovak bank to Medvedov and further to the double city Komárom/Komarno.

  • Day 5, Esztergom (56 km)
    Passing the Roman fort Kelemantia riding further on the beautiful free traffic paths through rural villages on the bank to Styrovo and Esztergom.

  • Day 6, Budapest (54 km cycling, 18 km by train)
    Riding to Königsburg Visegrád continuing by ferry to the left bank to Szob and further through the famous Danube Bend to Szentendre. By train to Budapest (or by bike till hotel; 74 km)

  • Day 7, Departure
    Stay extension or return journey by train. Departure from Budapest at 09:10/in Vienna at 12:08; In case of own bikes transportation, departure at 09:21/arrival at 13:27 (change in Györ). Bike ticket not included. Saturdays by bus (transport of own bicycles from the hotel at a surcharge of € 30,- without/€ 83,- with transport insurance).

CUISINE

The Slovak and Hungarian cuisine are closely related. Substantial dishes are eaten with lots of bread, all piquantly spiced. Five times breakfast buffet and one extended breakfast.
