Altmühl cycle route

Germany's first long-distance cycle route

The Altmühl Cycle Route is Germany's first long-distance cycle route and has long been considered a superlative among Bavaria's many beautiful regions. The Altmühl has the lowest flow rate of all rivers! Only since the uplift of the Alps has the Danube had a new river bed further south, breaking through the Franconian Alb at Kelheim. What has remained is the originally wide Danube valley for the small Altmühl with many river bends, beautiful baffling meanders and an aesthetically impressive low mountain range. To promote the regional economy, Germany's first long-distance cycle route was created in 1985; today, the Altmühl valley cycle route is one of the most popular cycle routes in Europe.

The approx. 250 km long long-distance cycle route leads through the Altmühl valley, past the popular bathing lakes of Brombach and lake Altmühl. Apart from a few short climbs to Rothenburg, the cycle tour is mostly flat through the river valley.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is an ideal starting spot for an Altmühl cycle tour. Culture lovers will be particularly thrilled by the medieval townscape.
