Austria's largest cultural and information medium "Österreich 1", Ö1 for short, was a guest on our 4****Sup. MS Primadonna on a Danube river cruise to the small town of Kalocsa in southern Hungary.

History of Danube tourism

The MS Primadonna sails the Danube from Passau to the Black Sea. In the radio programme, Donau Touristik Managing Director and founder Manfred Traunmüller explains where his connection to the Danube comes from:

"My parents had a butcher's shop near the Danube. It was not far from the main square in Linz. Even back then, my mother supplied the DDSG excursion boats with sausage and meat products. I can still see that now and that's how my interest in the Danube developed."

Trend: From cycling to cycle cruises

Manfred Traunmüller explains that his great passion has always been cycling. So it was a logical step to also offer numerous combined bike and boat trips. Shorter stops in several cities are also popular with customers. On the trip to Kalocsa, for example, the stop is accompanied by a guided tour of the town.

On board the MS Primadonna

The radio team from Ö1 was able to get an impression of the MS Primadonna. The river catamaran shines with generous facilities and offers entertaining entertainment. The cosy lounges range from the 60 metre long and 8 metre wide atrium to the bow in the Primaverabar.

Recommendation from "host" Traunmüller: "You have a wonderful view of the Danube in the amphitheatre. As in a cinema or theatre, the picturesque landscape passing by can be admired through a 9-metre high glass front. Passing through locks, such as the one in Freudenau, is a special spectacle."

While Captain Radomir Bobokovic steers the Primadonna through the night, guests on board can round off the evening with music by Svatomir Vodak, founder and leader of the Danube String Quartet.

Arrival in the southern Hungarian Puszta

The trip takes the radio team and the guests of the Primadonna to Kalocsa. There, we recommend visiting the Paprika Museum, the Archbishop's Palace, the baroque cathedral and its library. Take a cosy break in one of the many small cafés. A guided tour of the town will immerse you in the world of the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, whose monument stands in Kalocsa.
