Eichstätt

The Upper Bavarian city of Eichstätt is located directly on the popular Altmühlradweg, about 43 kilometers from Beilngries and 26 kilometers from Ingolstadt. The Limes cycle path also stops in Eichstätt.The city is surrounded by the beautiful Altmühltal Nature Park.

The Altmühlpark visitor and information center is housed in the former Notre Dame du Sacré Coeur monastery outside the former city walls. The exhibition on the Altmühlpark natural landscape stretches over two floors with different stations that invite you to listen, feel and discover.

The Willibaldsburg, a castle fortress from the 14th century, west of the old town of Eichstatt, 464 meters high above the Altmühl vale. Nowadays the fortress is home to the Jura Museum Eichstätt with its focus on fossils from the Solnhofer Plattenkalke, a reef and lagoon landscape of the Jura. A special highlight are the display aquariums, which allow the comparison of the fossils with living animals. Pearl boats, belonging to the type of nautilae, horseshoe crabs and garfish are kept in natural habitats.

There are countless extensive parks and picturesque gardens in the urban area, the courtyard garden at the summer residence was built around 1735 with originally baroque garden design, in the 19th century parts of the complex were converted into an English landscape ridge.

Countless sights in Eichstätt can be walked or cycled, especially in the summer months the cityscape is dominated by cyclists who follow the Altmühltal cycle path.
