Würzburg

The wine town of Würzburg, situated on the River Main, was once an important economic, sovereign and spiritual centre. The Würzburg Bishop's Residence is one of the most important castles in Europe and, together with the Court Garden and Residence Square, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

Top Sights

In addition to the residence, there are architectural monuments from various eras in the city centre. Important buildings include the Marienberg Fortress with St. Mary's Church, St. Kilian's Cathedral, St. Mary's Chapel and the Neubaukirche. The path across the historic Old Main Bridge is lined with statues of saints.

Culture & Events

The importance of culture is evident not only in the large number of museums and theatres, but also in the festivals that take place regularly.

Culinary

In Würzburg, enjoyment comes alive with a diverse gastronomy. Especially as the centre of Franconian wine, you will find traditional wineries with large wine taverns. You have to try the wine-spiced Winzerbratwurst. A special feature are the wine taverns known as Bäcken, where people are allowed to consume food they have brought with them.
