Overview
Real Donau Touristik
  • Before the Alps rose, the Danube flowed through the Wellheim and Altmühl valleys. This creates an interesting circular tour between the capital of the independent diocese of Eichstätt and the seat of the first German parliament, the ‘perpetual’ Reichstag in Regensburg.
  • Narrow valleys in the Franconian Alb alternate with the wide open spaces of Lower Bavaria near Vohburg – a cultural landscape full of charm and beauty.

Tour
  •  296 km by bike, 50 minutes by boat
  •  Through the Wellheim Valley, you will cycle through slightly hilly terrain, mostly on an old railway line.
Route
Day 1, arrival in Eichstätt

Parking near the hotel (approx. €10 per week on site). Your rental bike (if booked) will be waiting for you at the hotel.

Day 2, Riedenburg, 68 km by bike

The car-free Altmühl Cycle Route takes you through juniper heathland, past Walting, Kipfenberg (the geographical centre of Bavaria) and Kinding (fortified church) via Beilngries (baroque town hall, Hirschberg Castle) to your destination for the day.

Day 3, Regensburg, 56 km by bike

Via Bad Abbach, you will reach Regensburg (UNESCO World Heritage City with Stone Bridge, cathedral, Thurn und Taxis Palace and much more) on the Danube Cycle Path. Guided tour of the historic Reichstag in the Old Town Hall with torture chamber (included).
Tip: Continue to the Walhalla on the Danube Cycle Path and return by boat (+ 16 km by bike and 120 minutes by boat; boat trip payable on site).

Day 4, Bad Gögging, 50 km by bike, 50 minutes by boat

Another car-free ride past Saal to the Danube Breakthrough boat station. Boat trip (approximately every hour) to the secluded Weltenburg Abbey (atmospheric beer garden) and to the day's destination.

Day 5, Neuburg/Danube, 56 km by bike

Along the Danube Cycle Path through hop fields to the royal seat of Neuburg.

Day 6, Wellheimer Trockental, 60 km by bike

A short stretch along the Danube, then on through the Wellheimer Trockental (Urdonau) via Dollnstein to the clerical town of Eichstätt. Overnight stay as on the day of arrival.

Day 7, end of the bike tour

After breakfast or additional nights.
