Overview

There is plenty to see along the route of this 6-day cycling tour through the Altmühl Valley. You will pass medieval Weißenburg, Eichstätt with its cathedral, residence and Willibaldsburg Castle, and the Roman fort of Pfünz on your way to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg.

Arrival every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 1 May to 26 September

Low season: 20 to 26 September
Mid season: 1 to 18 May, 14 June to 20 July, and 16 August to 19 September
High season: 22 May to 13 June and 24 July to 15 August

Route
Day 1, Arrival

in Gunzenhausen. Your rental bike (if booked) will be waiting for you at the hotel. Parking is available in an unguarded, public, free car park near the bike rental point.

Day 2, Wettelsheim/Weißenburg (46 km)

Shortly before Berolzheim, you will reach medieval Weißenburg with its impressive Ellinger Tor, one of the most beautiful city gates in southern Germany. Continue via Karlsgraben to Wettelsheim.

Day 3, Eichstätt (50 km)

Cycle along the many river bends to the bishopric town of Eichstätt (residence, cathedral, Willibaldsburg castle).

Day 4, Riedenburg/Meihern (64 km)

Through the nature park to the Roman fort in Pfünz. Via Arnsberg and Beilngries to the day's destination.

Day 5, Regensburg (56 km)

Passing Essing, you reach Kelheim. Our tip: take a boat trip through the Danube Gorge to Weltenburg Abbey and back (approximately €20 on site). Continue by bike past Bad Abbach to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg. The route can be shortened individually by train, for example from Saal (approximately €11 on site; then only 40 km by bike, 30 minutes by train).

Day 6, end of the cycle tour

Return trip to Gunzenhausen for an additional charge: Saturdays (entire season) and additionally on weekdays (June and September) by bus. On the remaining days by train (2 x change). Transfer of your own bike to Gunzenhausen as part of the bus return transfer and additionally every Thursday, Friday and Sunday via night transfer (latest drop-off the day before at 5 p.m.) for an additional charge of €38 (if train/bus booked through us).
