With a height difference of 38 meters, it is one of the largest double vertical ship lifts in Europe. Two massive caissons—water-filled basins in which the ships stand—move up and down like an elevator. While one ship is lifted, another is lowered at the same time. This principle saves energy and ensures smooth and efficient operation. Since its commissioning in 1975, the ship lift has been an essential part of inland shipping between the Mittelland Canal and the River Elbe. Every year, thousands of inland vessels pass through the facility quickly, safely, and efficiently.

The Scharnebeck Ship Lift is also a fascinating attraction for visitors. From the viewing platform, guests can enjoy an impressive view of the operation. On-site information boards explain the technology in a clear and accessible way—ideal for both adults and children. A visit to Germany’s largest ship lift is well worth it, whether you are a technology enthusiast, a walker, or a day-tripper.
