Melsungen
Top Sights
Melsungen Town Hall, a magnificent half-timbered building from the 16th century, is considered the town’s landmark. The Bartenwetzer Bridge, a stone bridge dating back to the 16th century, is also particularly worth seeing. Melsungen Castle, a former hunting lodge that today houses, among other things, the district court, is a popular destination for visitors. Around Melsungen, the Fulda Cycle Path and numerous hiking trails through forests, meadows, and along the river invite visitors to enjoy active recreation in nature.
Culture & Events
At the year-round Bartenwetzer weekly market, held every Thursday around the historic town hall, visitors can expect a colorful selection of fresh and regional products. Especially popular is the summer series “Enchanted Castle Garden,” during which the castle garden is transformed into an atmospheric beer garden with live music. A highlight of the year is the traditional Melsungen Heimatfest. The Melsungen Local History Museum, with its changing exhibitions, offers interesting insights into the history and crafts of the region.
Cuisine
In Melsungen, down-to-earth Hessian character meets regional culinary tradition. Typical are hearty specialties such as Ahle Wurscht, a traditional North Hessian cured sausage that develops its distinctive, robust flavor through slow maturation. The simple farmhouse dish Duckefett, made from bacon, onions, and sour cream, is usually served with boiled potatoes and has been passed down within families to this day. It recalls a time when people shared their meals from a common bowl.
