The complex was first mentioned in 945 AD. Today, the castle houses the Messner Mountain Museum, founded by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner and dedicated to the history of mountaineering. The castle's architecture is an impressive example of medieval fortification, with sweeping views of the Eisack Valley and the Texel Group.
