Speyer is best known for its cathedral, which, as the largest still-preserved Romanesque church in the world, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Other top sights in Speyer include Protestant churches, such as the Trinity Church (Dreifaltigkeitskirche) and the Memorial Church (Gedächtniskirche). Opposite the cathedral stands the Altpörtel, the 55-meter-high western city gate, which was once part of the medieval fortifications and marks the end of Maximilianstraße. It is one of the tallest and most significant city gates in Germany.
