Top sights

Salem Castle, formerly a Cistercian monastery, now houses Europe's largest fire brigade museum, a distillery and cooperage museum, the archives of the Lake Constance district art collection, a historic smithy and a wine cellar. Exciting guided tours provide more information about the historical background. Another attraction is Affenberg, Germany's largest monkey enclosure, which is open to visitors. Around 200 Barbary macaques roam freely in the almost 20-hectare forest. With no barriers or ditches separating them, visitors can stroll through the forest on natural, well-maintained paths.
