A boat trip to the Iron Gate
A unique experience - come with us on a journey with extraordinary and impressive natural beauty. The cruise on the MS Primadonna from Vienna to the Iron Gate through the Carpathians offers charming contrasts and a host of sights, such as the Golubac Fortress at the beginning of the Iron Gate, the Peterwardein Fortress in Novi Sad, the Church of St George in Kladovo and the Bay of Orşova in Romania.
Part 1: From Vienna to Bratislava and Budapest
After embarkation in Vienna-Nussdorf, it's"cast off" for the MS Primadonna from Vienna-Nussdorf. Through the Danube Wetlands National Park, one of the largest intact wetland landscapes in Europe, the journey continues to Bratislava. The entrance to Budapest , a metropolis of 1,750,000 inhabitants, is particularly impressive, with many of the city's notable buildings standing on the banks of the Danube.
To the north of Gellért Hill is Castle Hill with the former royal palace, the Castle Palace. The palace houses the National Library, the National Gallery and the Historical Museum. Next to the castle, the Hungarian President has his seat in the classicist Sándor Palace. At the foot of the castle hill is the Várkert Bazár, the end of the castle complex facing the Danube. In the northern part of the castle hill rises the Matthias Church and, in front of it facing the Danube, the Fisherman's Bastion. The Buda Castle District and the Danube panorama have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987. A labyrinth system, some of which is open to the public, runs beneath the castle district.
Part 2: Belgrade, Kladovo and Novi Sad - through the Iron Gate
From Budapest, the journey continues to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. There it is worth visiting the Kalemegdan fortress. The pedestrian zone with various cathedrals and mosques is well worth a visit. As you continue towards Kladovo , you can already see the graceful rocky valley with the Iron Gate, where the Danube is up to 60 metres deep and only 65 metres wide in places. At the second largest Danube power station, Iron Gate 1, the water level is 20 metres above the Hungarian plain, giving you a magnificent view from the open-air deck (+ 8.5 metres) as far as the horizon!
Next stop Novi Sad: with a very beautiful centre. A splendid town square with town hall, various palaces and the impressive cathedral await you, as well as the Peterwardein fortress, which is considered impregnable and offers a marvellous panoramic view.
Part 3: Kalocsa, Esztergom, Komárno
In the small Hungarian town of Kalocsa , its huge cathedral rises like a rock in the middle of the Puszta. The baroque bishop's palace with St Stephen's crown is also worth seeing. The next stop is Štúrovo - Esztergom, the first Hungarian capital with a fortress hill and cathedral with a population of around 28,500. The last stop before the return journey to Vienna is the fortified town of Komárno, which you can visit.
