Top sights
The Baroque Martin’s Tower is the city’s landmark. Thanks to its panoramic view over Bregenz, it once served as a watchtower and is considered the largest onion-domed tower in Central Europe. The view over Lake Constance from the Pfänder, Bregenz’s local mountain, is also well worth seeing. Another highlight is the Bregenz Festival Stage, the largest floating stage in the world, which offers impressive opera performances, especially in summer. The historic Upper Town, with its well-preserved medieval buildings, and the modern Kunsthaus Bregenz, which presents contemporary artworks, are also well worth a visit.
The Schweinebucht, a picturesque lakeside area, invites visitors to linger and relax. The Fischersteg, a historic landing stage on Lake Constance, offers an idyllic view of the lake and the surrounding landscape. The Herz-Jesu Church, with its impressive architecture and artistic stained-glass windows, is another cultural attraction. Mehrerau Abbey offers an insight into the spiritual history of the region.

For art and culture lovers, Bregenz has a great deal to offer not only in its art venues, museums and galleries, but also in public open spaces. Among the internationally best-known events are the Bregenz Festival, featuring operas performed outdoors on a floating stage. In addition to opera performances, the festival also offers concerts and theatre productions. Another cultural highlight is the Bregenzer Frühling, an international festival for contemporary dance.

Countless restaurants, inns, bars and cafés in Bregenz cater to visitors’ culinary needs. Menus feature many local products, such as fresh fish from the Lake Constance region and cheese from the nearby Alps. Traditional Vorarlberg dishes such as Käsknöpfle and Riebel are especially recommended. In addition, visitors can discover a wide variety of regional specialities at Bregenz’s weekly markets and buy them directly from the producers. Wine tastings in the surrounding wine regions also offer special culinary experiences.
