Top Sights

In the old town, more than 700 half-timbered houses can be found—an impressive ensemble that reflects the region’s architectural heritage. The historic town hall from the 17th century is one of the most important buildings of the Weser Renaissance. The Welfenschloss, a 16th-century palace with its impressive arcaded courtyard and ornate sandstone façades, now houses the Municipal Museum. Just a few minutes’ walk from the old town lies the Weser Stone: “Where Werra and Fulda kiss …” is written on the stone—a romantic spot to watch the confluence of the rivers.

Culture & Events

The famous Baroque physician Doctor Eisenbarth (1663–1727), a star of his time, found his final place of work and his final resting place in Hann. Münden. To this day, he is honored with monuments and the well-known song “Ich bin der Doktor Eisenbart, kurier’ die Leut’ auf meine Art …”. Guided tours of the old town, themed city walks, and museum visits are part of the cultural program. Regular events include markets, art and cultural festivals, as well as river and water-related events, for example for paddlers and canoeists.

Cuisine

Specialties and traditional dishes can be found in the inns and brewpubs of the old town. One example is homemade “Bregenwurst” served with kale and boiled potatoes—a solid example of hearty regional cuisine. A visit to one of the traditional brewpubs with their half-timbered atmosphere is highly recommended, where classics such as pork knuckle, roast pork with crackling, or seasonal menu offerings are served.
