Bad Hersfeld is a town in East Hesse, located in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in the state of Hesse. The town lies at the rivers Fulda and Haune. Bad Hersfeld is surrounded by low mountain ranges such as the Knüll Mountains, the Seulingswald, and the foothills of the Rhön. Historically, the town developed from the founding of Hersfeld Abbey, which played an important religious and political role in the Middle Ages. Today, Bad Hersfeld is especially known as a spa and festival town and serves an important role as a cultural, administrative, and economic center in the region.
