Karlsruhe is a baroque planned city from the 18th century and is known for its fan-shaped city layout. The centrepiece is Karlsruhe Palace with its palace gardens. Other attractions include the Centre for Art and Media (ZKM), the Zoological City Garden, and important museums and historic buildings. The city is surrounded by green spaces, the Hardtwald forest and the Rhine floodplains, which are ideal for recreation.
