In addition to Pappenheim Castle, this spa town is home to numerous other medieval buildings. The oldest structure is St. Gallus Church, dating back to the 9th century and considered one of the oldest churches in all of southern Germany. The town not only has one castle, but two: the “Old Castle” and the “New Castle.” Both still shape Pappenheim’s medieval townscape today. They are owned by the noble Egloffstein family and are now used as residences and offices.

Culture

In Pappenheim, different worlds and eras come together — something you notice from the very first walk through the town. Whether churches or castles, Baroque or Romantic styles, this historic old town reflects architecture from multiple periods. The medieval atmosphere is especially palpable when strolling through its streets.

Cuisine

Its location along the Altmühl River promises local and distinctive culinary delights. Franconian cuisine, influenced by Roman and Bavarian traditions as well as Swabian elements, characterizes the food culture in Pappenheim.
