Peschiera
Top sights
The star-shaped fortress of Peschiera is particularly worth seeing. It is the largest military installation on Lake Garda and dates back to Roman times. The gigantic fortress was repeatedly expanded under the rule of the Scaligeri and Napoleon. It is located in the middle of the Mincio River, which forms a continuous waterway to the Adriatic Sea together with the Po.
The imposing lion sculpture that adorns the archway of Porta Verona is the monumental city gate through which you enter the old town coming from Verona. It depicts the lion of San Marco, which was the symbol of the Serenssima Republic of Venice.
The city lies at the foot of the morainic hills, where the waters of Lake Garda flow into the Minicio. It is completely surrounded by canals and the historic center is enclosed by walls.
