When strolling through Rovereto's historic city center, it is only a short climb to cross the main gate of the castle. Today, Rovereto Castle houses the historic war museum with uniforms, armor, weapons, and documents. They illustrate the history of battles and wars spanning over five centuries, from the Renaissance to World War I. The evening in Rovereto is heralded by the largest free-sounding bell in the world, “Maria Dolens.” It was cast in 1924 from the cannons of former enemy warring parties. Its ringing has always been a reminder of peaceful coexistence among peoples.
Culture & Events
As the cultural capital of Trentino, it is considered by culture lovers to be a highlight for contemporary art in Italy and Europe. The large museum of modern and contemporary art is one of the most visited places in Rovereto and is particularly recognizable by its iconic dome. It was designed by architect Mario Botta. Inside, there are approximately 20,000 works of art, including works by Depero, De Chirico, Balla, Morandi, and Fontana. The House of Futurist Art houses the most important art collection of the Italian artist Fortunato Depero. The exhibition is only a few minutes' walk from the Mart.
