Wittenberg

The city of Lutherstadt Wittenberg is located on the Elbe River, about 100 km southwest of Berlin. The Luther House, the Melanchthon House, the Town Church, and the Castle Church have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage as Luther memorial sites since 1996. Wittenberg became known as one of the most important German centers for political, cultural-historical, and artistic endeavors in the 16th century.

Top Sights

In Wittenberg, visitors can explore four UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Luther House, the Town Church, the Melanchthon House, and the Castle Church. Also worth seeing are the Town Hall with its Renaissance façade and the Cranach Courtyards. Historically significant is the Luther Oak, where Martin Luther burned the papal bull in 1520, marking the break with the Roman Catholic Church.
