Route
Day 1, Villach

Individual arrival in Villach. Upon arrival at your hotel, you will receive your travel documents, and any pre-booked rental bikes will be provided for the upcoming stages of your cycling holiday. If arriving by car, parking is available directly at the hotel, subject to availability and payable on site. Alternatively, you may use the free public Willroider car park on SEZ Straße. Additional parking options include the parking garages at Villach main railway station for approximately € 68,- per week per car, or the Contipark underground car park at Hausergasse 13 for approximately € 12,- per night, both payable on site. This allows you to begin your cycling adventure relaxed and well prepared.

Overnight stay in a 4☼☼☼☼ hotel

Day 2, Valbruna (44 km by bike, 341 metres altitude)

After departing from Villach, you follow a particularly pleasant route that is almost entirely traffic free. Cycling alongside or near the Gail river, the path climbs gently and steadily through extensive forests and a series of picturesque villages. The route first leads to Arnoldstein, offering recurring views of the surrounding landscape and the nearby mountain ranges. Crossing the border into Italy, you continue through the scenic alpine valley before reaching today’s destination, Valbruna, known in German as Wolfsbach. The peaceful setting and beautiful location amid the mountains provide a memorable and relaxing end to your first day of the cycling trip.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel

Day 3, Carnia/Gemona (47/60 km by bike)

Today you experience one of the most impressive sections of the Alpe Adria Cycle Path, widely regarded as the highlight of the entire route. Following the narrow valley of the River Fella, you cycle largely traffic free along a former railway line that has been transformed into an excellent cycling trail. This easy and scenic route combines stunning natural surroundings with fascinating historical infrastructure. Passing through Pontebba, you continue southwards. After a short section on local roads, the journey leads on through the striking mountain landscape before you reach Carnia or Gemona, the destination of this varied and rewarding stage.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel

Day 4, Udine (44/57 km by bike)

Today’s stage takes you through the fertile countryside of the Friuli region. The route alternates between traffic free cycle paths and quiet secondary roads, often following the course of the River Tagliamento. Along the way, you pass through Osoppo and Buja while enjoying wide views across the cultivated landscape of vineyards, fields and traditional villages. Your destination is Udine, a historic trading city renowned for its cultural heritage and elegant atmosphere. Highlights include Piazza della Libertà, Piazza Matteotti, the cathedral and the charming old town, where lively streets and Italian flair invite you to explore at your own pace after arrival.

Overnight stay in a 4☼☼☼☼ hotel

Day 5, Grado (57 km by bike)

Leaving Udine behind on well maintained cycle paths, you cross the fertile countryside. Passing through charming villages such as Pavia, you arrive in Palmanova, the renowned Venetian fortress town dating back to the 16th century. Highlights include Piazza Grande, the cathedral, elegant Renaissance palaces and the remarkably preserved city walls. Continuing via Cervignano, you reach Aquileia, once an imperial residence of the Roman Empire and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The final stretch leads through the impressive lagoon landscape to the historic seaside town of Grado on the Adriatic coast.

Overnight stay in a 4☼☼☼☼ hotel or a 3☼☼☼S hotel.

Day 6, End of the cycle tour

After breakfast, your cycling holiday in Grado comes to an end. If you wish, you can extend your stay on the Adriatic coast by booking additional nights and enjoy more time in this charming seaside town. For your return journey, a bus transfer is available at an additional cost from a centrally located meeting point near the hotel, approximately 5 to 10 minutes on foot, to your arrival hotel in Villach. Arrival in Villach is scheduled between 12:00 and 14:00. After the transfer, you continue your individual journey home.

The return transfer for passengers can be booked at a supplement of € 55,- per person. The transfer operates every Friday and Sunday from 14 May to 24 October, as well as every Saturday from 1 May to 16 October. On all other days, the return journey to Villach must be arranged independently.
