St. Wolfgang holds an outstanding place in the cultural history of the state of Upper Austria. The market town lies at the foot of the famous Schafberg (with a cog railway operating since 1893 to the 1,783-meter-high summit) on the northern shore of the 13.5 km² Abersee, also known as Lake Wolfgang, at an elevation of 539 meters above sea level, and is recognized as a climatic health resort.
