Upon your individual arrival in Mallnitz, you will receive your travel documents and, if booked, your rental bikes at the arrival hotel. The documents also contain useful travel tips and important information for the days ahead. Parking for the duration of your cycling holiday is included, either directly at the hotel or at the nearby public car park, which is approximately a three minute walk away. Take the rest of the day to settle in and prepare for the upcoming cycling adventure through the beautiful Alpine landscape.

Day 2, Spittal/Seeboden (54 km by bike)Today you follow the Alpe Adria Cycle Path from Mallnitz through the Möll Valley. The route continues along the valley floor to Obervellach before leading into the Drau Valley. Cycling past the Möll Bridge, you reach Seeboden on the shores of Lake Millstatt. If you would like to extend your ride, a scenic detour along the traffic free Millstättersee Cycle Path to Sappl is highly recommended. Enjoy beautiful views across the lake and the surrounding mountains before returning to Seeboden and continuing to your accommodation for the evening.

Day 3, Tarvis (69 km by bike/312 m ascent)Today’s stage follows mostly flat terrain and traffic free cycle paths along the River Drau. You cycle via Paternion to the charming town of Villach, whose attractive historic centre invites you to pause and explore. From here, the route continues gently but steadily uphill along the River Gail towards Arnoldstein. Surrounded by impressive Alpine scenery, you gradually approach the Italian border before reaching Tarvis, beautifully situated amidst the mountains and known for its unique blend of Austrian, Italian and Slovenian influences.

Today you reach one of the most spectacular sections of the Alpe Adria Cycle Path. Following the course of the Fella River, you cycle through a narrow Alpine valley on the route of a former railway line that has been converted into an excellent cycle path. Surrounded by impressive mountain scenery, you enjoy a largely traffic free ride to Pontebba. After a short section on regular roads, the route continues south towards Venzone or Gemona. Both historic towns mark the transition from the Alps to the Italian lowlands and provide an attractive setting for the end of today’s stage.

Leaving the Alpine foothills behind, today’s route leads you through the fertile landscapes of Friuli. You cycle partly on traffic free sections and partly on quiet side roads, often close to the Tagliamento River. Passing through Buia, you continue south towards Udine, one of the region’s most elegant and historically significant cities. Once a flourishing trading centre, Udine impresses with its charming old town and numerous sights, including Piazza della Libertà, Piazza Matteotti and the Duomo. You have plenty of opportunity to explore the city’s lively atmosphere before ending the day in this attractive destination.

Today you continue through the heart of the Friuli region towards the Adriatic coast. The route leads via Palmanova, renowned for its impressive Venetian star shaped fortress and unique town layout. From there, you cycle on through the fertile plains to Aquileia, one of the most important archaeological sites in northern Italy with a remarkable Roman heritage. The final section takes you through the tranquil lagoon landscape before reaching the charming seaside town of Grado, where the atmosphere of the Adriatic marks a fitting conclusion to this memorable cycling journey.

Day 7, Triest (33 km bike, 24 train minutes)On the final stage of your journey, you cycle mostly on well maintained cycle paths and quiet side roads through the unique lagoon landscape around Monfalcone. This characteristic coastal environment, shaped by wetlands, waterways and wide open views, accompanies you for much of the day. To reach your destination comfortably, a short train journey brings you to nearby Trieste. A bike ticket is required and can be purchased on site for approximately € 2,-. The elegant port city on the Adriatic sea offers a fascinating blend of cultures and an atmospheric setting to conclude your Alpe Adria cycling adventure.

Day 8, End of the bike tourAfter breakfast, your cycling holiday comes to an end. Depending on your travel plans, you begin your individual journey home or extend your stay with additional nights. Should you decide to remain in the region a little longer, you have the opportunity to further explore the surroundings at your own pace and enjoy the atmosphere of the Adriatic coast before continuing your onward journey.
Information for the return transferPassenger return transferThe passenger return transfer can be booked for a supplement of € 32,- per person. Daily transfer back to Mallnitz via train from Trieste at 7:52 a.m., arrival around 12:30 p.m. (depending on the timetable with change of trains up to two times)
Return transfer of your own bikesIf you are travelling with your own bicycle, a return transfer can be booked for a supplement of € 40 per bicycle. The service is available every Friday, with collection in Trieste on Friday evening and delivery to Mallnitz on Saturday. On all other days, the return transport of your bicycle must be arranged independently.
