Insider tips Alpe Adria cycle path

From Carinthia to the Adriatic

An exceptionally beautiful cycle route that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Well-maintained cycle paths, important natural jewels along the way and the sea as a destination. Many cyclists dream of crossing the Alps - and who would have thought that this can be "experienced" along the old railway lines and tunnels without strenuous pass ascents. We sent our boss Mr Manfred Traunmüller himself on a "test ride" and asked him about his experiences on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path.

Everyone is talking about the Alpe Adria cycle path, but is it really suitable for leisure cyclists?

That depends on the route and the starting point. From Salzburg through the Gastein Valley, there is quite a steep section to cycle. We therefore recommend the route from Mallnitz or Villach in Carinthia, where there is only one slightly uphill section after the border. However, this is easily manageable for any leisure cyclist.

What is special about the route?

Culturally and culinarily, the route puts a smile on your face. Travelling under your own steam from the harsh beauty of the main Alpine ridge through the Hohe Tauern National Park to the lovely cultural landscape of Upper Italy is a unique feeling. At first you are surrounded by 3000 metre peaks, 300 - 400 metre high waterfalls and secluded mountain lakes near Mallnitz/Bad Gastein. In Italy, you then experience historic cultural cities, wine regions and finally "La Dolce Vita" on the Adriatic.

How is the cycle path generally constructed?

Excellent on the former railway line from Carinthia to Upper Italy, which has been heavily invested in. The route is mostly flat and 90% car-free through unspoilt nature and idyllic villages. There are many small villages along the way, such as Moggio, Udinese and Gemona, which have hardly been recognised by tourists to date.

What is particularly worth seeing along the journey?

The cathedral of Udine, the imperial residence of Aquileia, the star-shaped city of Palmanova and the city centre of Grado are unique cultural treasures. In terms of landscape, the numerous Carinthian lakes, the gentle vineyards in Friuli and the lagoons off Grado are very impressive for me.

Which restaurant is an insider tip?

The Pizzeria Manin restaurant is located in Udine, just a few steps away from Piazza della Liberta. The chef himself welcomes you there and spoils you with the best Margherita pizza in a long time for just € 7! The house wine was also of excellent quality - 0.25 litres cost just €3! Salute 😉
