Overview

The Weser Cycle Route has been Germany’s most popular long-distance bike route for many years. The numerous sights along the way, linked by the Weser Renaissance architectural style, the attractive destination, and the contrasts between the narrow river valley with its many river bends (meanders) and the open spaces of Lower Saxony, along with an almost entirely car-free route, make this tour one of the most beautiful in Central Europe.

Route
Day 1, Hann. Münden

Travel independently to Hann. Münden, one of the best-known towns at the start of the Weser Cycle Route. Take some time to stroll through the historic old town with its impressive half-timbered houses. Highlights include the town hall, the Weserstein, the Welfenschloss, and Blasius Cathedral. The Weser River is formed at the confluence of the Fulda and Werra rivers—the very spot made famous by the well-known saying, “Where the Fulda and Werra kiss and lose their names.” You’ll receive your travel documents and, if booked, your rental bikes at the hotel where you’ll be staying upon arrival.

Overnight stay at a 4☼☼☼☼hotel.

General information: Parking is available in the parking garage in Hann. Münden (approx. €30 per day, payable on site).

Day 2, Bad Karlshafen (45 km)

Your first cycling stage takes you along the Weser River through a peaceful, unspoiled landscape. Passing the secluded Bursfelde Abbey, you’ll follow the river to Gewissenruh. Today’s destination is the small Huguenot town of Bad Karlshafen, whose history continues to shape the town’s character to this day. The route offers a varied start to your trip and combines culturally interesting stops with a relaxing cycling experience along one of Germany’s most famous rivers.

Active Option: On the award-winning 5-star Diemel Bike Trail, you’ll also cycle to Trendelburg Castle (+28 km round trip).

Overnight stay at a 3☼☼☼hotel.

Day 3, Bodenwerder (66 km)

Today you’ll follow the Weser River through several historic towns. Via Beverungen, the route takes you to Höxter, home to Corvey Castle and a charming old town. You’ll then reach Holzminden before the route winds through a romantic narrow valley. Numerous bends in the river and charming views accompany you on the way to Bodenwerder. The varied route combines nature experiences with cultural sights and offers numerous opportunities for interesting stops along the way.

Overnight stay at a 3☼☼☼hotel.

Day 4, Hameln (41 km)

Today’s stage gives you the opportunity to get to know the Weser region even more intimately. Along the way, you’ll visit Hämelschenburg Castle, one of the most significant structures of the Weser Renaissance. You’ll then reach Hamelin, the famous “Pied Piper” town with its historic old town and numerous traces of the well-known legend. The relatively short daily route allows plenty of time to get to know the area and its people better and to discover the town’s special atmosphere at your own pace.

Active option: Additional round trip on bike paths to Bad Pyrmont with its elegant parks (+ 19 km round trip).

Overnight stay at a 4☼☼☼☼hotel.

Day 5, Porta Westfalica/Minden (55 km)

From Hamelin, you’ll first cycle to Rinteln, whose townscape is characterized by the Weser Renaissance. The route continues via Holzhausen and Hausberge to Porta Westfalica, the impressive gorge of the Weser River. You’ll then reach the historic cathedral city of Minden. If you’d like, you can choose the longer route via Bad Oeynhausen and extend the day’s ride accordingly. Historic town centers and varied landscapes characterize this day’s journey along the Weser.

Overnight stay at a 4☼☼☼☼hotel.

Day 6, Nienburg (63 km)

The route first takes you through forested areas right along the Weser to Petershagen. You’ll then cycle past several lakes and reach the city of Nienburg via Stolzenau. Today’s destination captivates with its historic old town, the cathedral, and its picturesque location on the river. This stage combines scenic, nature-filled stretches with cultural highlights, offering a pleasant mix of leisurely cycling and interesting sightseeing opportunities.

Overnight stay at a 3☼☼☼hotel.

Day 7, Bremen (57 km by bike, 24 minutes by train)

You’ll follow the Weser River and the lake-rich landscapes toward Marklohe. Then you’ll cycle either along the romantic historic lock canal or via Drakenburg to Hoya, home to a castle and a former royal residence. The route continues to the cathedral town of Verden, whose magnificent old town is dominated by a Gothic hall church. From here, take the S-Bahn to Bremen’s city center—the trip takes about 24 minutes. Trains run approximately every half hour; the fare, including your bike, is about €12.

Active option: Bike to Achim instead of taking the train—a total cycling distance of 73 km—followed by a roughly 12-minute train ride.

Overnight stay at a 4☼☼☼☼hotel.

Day 8, Return Transfer

Your trip ends after breakfast. On Saturdays, the return trip is by bus, departing directly from the hotel at 8:30 a.m. and arriving at the parking lot in Hann. Münden around 1:15 p.m. On the other days of the week, you’ll return by train. The travel time is about 150 minutes and is based on scheduled train times or using an ICE train. Transportation of your own bicycle can be booked for an additional fee. This takes place on Saturdays as part of the bus return trip. On return days (Friday and Sunday), the return transfer includes drop-off the day before.
